Designed by Architectural Design Associates, the motel will reflect the retro-modern movement of the 70s and will offer 30 suites, each with a different theme.

“We are very happy to now be able to offer something to the community,” said co-owner Jennifer Flynn. “It took a long time to come.

“We couldn’t have asked for a nicer day and the location speaks for all that this property and community has to offer.

Flynn said she was already getting phone calls from couples planning weddings next year and in need of accommodations.

“I’ve already decided on all the themes (for the sequels),” Flynn said. “We’ve done everything from something very 70s retro, hipster genre, hippie style (and) our honeymoon suite will be like no other. I already have a red heart-shaped bathtub in my garage.

“We want to create that wow factor when people walk in. It’s something unique.”

Partner Jim Flynn said the price of the project, which is located at 96 County Rd. 50 W. at the intersection with Dunn Road, is “growing by the day.”

“We’re at about five and a half million dollars today,” he said. “We try to keep those costs under control, but in today’s environment, that’s what it is.”

They are aiming for a spring 2023 opening for the motel in the quaint seaside village.

Essex Mayor Richard Meloche called the project a “vote of confidence in the community”, adding that it will be a boost for wineries looking for accommodation and a regional hub for the tourism and cycling.

“I think it will be a good starting point to stimulate more development, and probably more business development,” Meloche said. “There is a push to have commercial (businesses) from here in Dunn (Road) to Erie (Road) through downtown here.”

Meloche said he’s spoken with others who are interested in opening small stores or boutiques, but want to retain that “small hometown feel.”

“You can see all the way to the lake from this property,” he said. “That was always the idea. When the city bought this property… controlled commercial development was what we envisioned.

The Flynns purchased the property from the city in 2021.

They also opened a bike rental business last summer called Grove Bike Company, a mobile bike shop, located in the park across from the yard.

“It was wonderful and because we also have the e-bikes, it makes them accessible to everyone,” Jennifer said. “So anyone who hasn’t ridden a bike can ride and not kill themselves trying to get to the first winery.”

Jennifer, who is from Tyendinaga First Nation, said the project was very meaningful to her as an Indigenous woman.

“Currently, Indigenous women make up only 0.06% of business owners in Canada and face a number of barriers to entrepreneurial success,” she said.

“(This project) represents the Indigenous women who take their places at the economic table today, but its retro appearance helps me remember the challenges that many before me have overcome so that I can be here to talk about this project now. .

“I am so proud of this motel. It will add something fun and original to the Colchester waterfront, anchor the local tourism industry and help build the regional economy.
