STREET STYLE: ENTIRE LOTTA LOVE
This Joshua Tree couple, Marissa Gonzales and Ryan Drobatz, express their admiration for each other’s retro style and for their favorite season in the desert.
YOUR STYLE, IN A SONG:
Marissa: “Didn’t I make you feel like you were the only man?” Yes! And haven’t I given you almost everything a woman can do? Honey, you know I did it! And every time I tell myself that I, well I think I’ve had enough, but I’m gonna show you, baby, that a woman can be tough.
Ryan: The Rolling Stones’ “Wild Horses”.
WHAT YOU BELIEVE ABOUT YOUR PARTNER’S STYLE:
Marissa: “He embodies that ’70s sensuality that makes me a dizzy teenager again. He’s like my personal Jimmy Page, minus all the women.
Ryan: “I love her beauty in everything she wears. The simplicity of her styling is very appealing – monochrome with lots of black and hints of ’60s and 70s style.
SPRING IN STYLE:
Marissa: “I love dresses and hats, all day, every day – I go hiking in my dress!” “
Ryan: “I love spring in the desert because you have the freedom to wear whatever you want!” You can dress without restriction for extreme weather conditions. It’s the best time of year in the desert.
COLOR ME …
Marissa: “I think my color has always been pink. I never wear it – ever – but it’s been my favorite color since childhood. I’ve always been a little rough around the edges, so it meant a different thing to me. Pink can be tough!
Ryan: “Black, because it’s dark and interesting. I am drawn to people who wear a lot of black. It speaks to me.
Marissa: “I have my Schott leather jacket and my knife with a buckhorn handle on me at all times. I earned the silly nickname “Tomb Raider” because of it.
Ryan: “My rings in sterling silver and turquoise, each handmade and signed by the artist who made them. I never take them off.
FAVORITE LOCAL SEARCH:
Marissa: “When we first started dating Ryan found me two posters: one is a tarot card print and the other is a herbal remedy chart. That’s when I thought, “I’m going to love this man forever.”
Ryan: “Hats I bought from Dakota Bob’s Western Wear at the Sky Village Swap Meet in Yucca Valley on the weekend. I always find great stuff there!
IF YOU CAN LIVE IN ANY ERA:
Marissa: “I was a history student at university, and each period marked me. I wish I could time travel so I could party with all my favorite historical idols while coming home and sleeping in my own bed.
Ryan: “The late ’60s to the early’ 70s. All the best music was happening and psychedelics were being introduced into the arts and creativity was exploding everywhere. “
Marissa: “Grace Slick from Jefferson Airplane, hands down! She was the first person to swear on national television – who wouldn’t want to be her? She’s worn everything from a two-piece paisley-patterned pantsuit to her famous Woodstock fringed top… and that Boy Scout shirt. She looked great in everything she wore.
Ryan: “Gram Parsons, for the iconic Nudie costumes and relaxed western vibe. David Bowie, for creating his own style unlike any other. John Lennon, circa 1970s, for his white suits, huge black hats and military jackets. Jimi Hendrix – the bell bottoms! “
Marissa: “In high school I had this great idea to cut my hair in an asymmetrical bob. I thought I was so cool. Then, a week later, TLC aired this new family show called Jon & Kate Plus 8, and I was horrified – Kate and I had the same hairstyle!
Ryan: “I once wore a pair of JNCO jeans [laughs hysterically]. “
